Edifício Garota de Ipanema.

On the block where bossa nova was written.

About the building

Edifício Garota de Ipanema in brief.

Edifício Garota de Ipanema sits at Rua Vinícius de Moraes 22 — the same block as the bar where Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes wrote 'Garota de Ipanema' in 1962 (then called Bar do Veloso, since renamed). Two blocks from Posto 9, walking distance to Lagoa, on the street the city named after the poet after his death.

Late-1950s build, predominantly two- and three-bedroom plates, with a small number of upper-floor units carrying partial ocean views over the Vinícius–Visconde de Pirajá corridor. Inventory is rare — units rarely list publicly.

History

How it got here.

Delivered in 1959, part of the post-war wave that turned Ipanema from a quiet beach annex into Rio's signature residential address. The building predates the song that made the street famous by three years.

In 1962, Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes were sitting at Bar do Veloso — a few doors from the building — watching a 17-year-old Helô Pinheiro walk to the beach. The song they wrote became the most-recorded Brazilian composition in history. The bar was eventually renamed Garota de Ipanema; the city renamed the street from Rua Montenegro to Rua Vinícius de Moraes after the poet's death in 1980.

The building has stayed in its original architectural language since delivery; common areas were last refreshed in the late 2010s.
